Mast High Madness!

Oh man, talk about getting right into it! Took off on some waves today!! Yow! Pretty finicky weather out here, chilly, with lots of rain squalls pushing through and killing the wind, but when it was good, it was really good! Casey and I ended up a little bit downwind from Ho'okipa, at a sketchy little launch site with just a few other people out. Rigged up the 5.0 Manic and Pocket 85 again, but I would've been fine on much smaller gear. The extra size did help with sneaking out past the very frequent, very big sets, though, so I was grateful to have the extra juice.

I snapped off just a few pictures, as I was mostly in the water while it was windy... The light was bad and the reef was pretty far out there... But they should give you an idea of the conditions.

The only shared wave of the day

Same wave... look closely to find both sailors!

Look closely, again!

Looks like these conditions are going to keep up for the next few days... I really played it conservative today... caught a bunch of the big ones, but stuck to the shoulders and kicked out early... Not too many critical lip smacks from me today... Maybe tomorrow I'll get a bit more aggressive... I just don't want to break all of Matt's gear... Poor guy's had enough breaks recently... (be warned- that last link is not for the faint of heart). Heal up fast, man!

Hey Andy, is that spot the place where you park in that neighborhood and walk your gear down a narrow path to a rocky launch?

If so, that's the spot I usually sail when I am there, though I always launch at the Blue Tile house and then go one tack upwind to the point. Great spot if you want a break from the heavy Hookipa crowd. Though, no cliffs for photographers! Nice sandy beach, though there is a shallow reef just offshore that you basically have to swim your gear over. However, on the way in, if you line up exactly with the parking sign, there is a very narrow channel which your fin can clear. Note the reef is only about 4 ft wide and runs the length of the beach.

Glad to see you found some surf out there! Remember, always wave 4 in the set! ; ) Have fun!!

It looks glorious, and just a handful of sailors there. I am so very jealous!

It's 17 degrees in New York City this morning.

Filth.

25 degrees at the jetty this a.m. Solid chest high with a stiff nnw wind cooling things off even more.

You missed it.

That's basically the spot Bill, you got it. Actually Jake was up in the rocks filming that day... This guy Russ was absolutely going off, and I had a front row seat for most of the action :)

Matt's got a great mental attitude, George. He'll be back on it in no time!

Pec-Puff(have you been bench pressing?) it was pretty rad to not have to give up one single wave to priority or even navigate around anyone, since there were only about 6 guys out at any given time. Which is good, because the conditions were challenging enough, without throwing in collision avoidance issues!

Dan- cold and chest high at the jetty is surely epic... I did indeed miss it...
